My Background

I spent the first eight years of my career as a paralegal at a criminal defense firm that handled hundreds of DUI cases each year. I sat in on client consultations, helped prepare DMV hearing requests, tracked case timelines, and watched firsthand what happened to people who didn't understand what they were facing.

The pattern I kept seeing: people were arriving at their first attorney consultation already at a disadvantage. They didn't know the difference between the DMV process and the criminal court. They didn't know what questions to ask. They didn't know whether the plea deal being offered was standard or exploitative. They were scared, confused, and completely dependent on whoever they happened to hire.

After eight years in criminal defense, I transitioned to the insurance industry — specifically specializing in SR-22 filings and high-risk auto policies. This gave me a second lens on the DUI aftermath that most people never see: the long-term financial damage. The insurance premiums that spike for three to five years. The SR-22 requirements. The difference in cost between insurers that understand DUI histories and those that don't.

Between those two careers — 20 years of working directly with people navigating DUI arrests — I have seen what goes wrong, what gets people better outcomes, and what information they needed to have before they walked into their first consultation.

Why I Wrote the Guide

Every piece of information in this guide exists somewhere on the internet. The problem is that it's scattered across law firm blog posts written to generate leads, Reddit threads of variable accuracy, and state DMV websites that are deliberately dense.

I wrote the DUI Next Steps guide to consolidate everything someone actually needs to know into a single, plain-English resource — organized in the order decisions need to be made, without a sales pitch attached.

The guide does not replace an attorney. It makes you a better-informed client so that when you do hire one, you can evaluate what you're being told, understand what's happening, and ask the questions that actually matter.
